Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG

--> The SL line has evolved quite radically since its debut in 1952 as a purpose-built sport/racing car. The name, an abbreviation for sport and light has resulted in iconic road cars ever since, including the legendary 300SL “Gullwing.”

Now sporting an aluminum body, it’s 200 lbs. lighter than the model it replaces. At the heart of the matter beats a six-liter twin-turbo V12 engine with a start/stop system to squeeze out every last inch of mileage from a car that brings with it a federally-imposed gas guzzler tax ($1,300). But when you are playing in this realm, such trivialities don’t matter.

Power comes in at a rather hefty 621 horsepower, while torque checks in at an other-worldly 738 lb-ft of torque between 2,300 and 4,300 rpm. All that brute rawness transmits to the rear wheels by AMG’s Speedshift seven-speed automatic transmission with its touch shift or alloy paddle shift levers.

The SL63 gets its ride characteristics by a four-wheel independent kit with automatic load leveling and high-speed lowering. The steering is a variable speed setup that tightens or softens for optimum operation at high or low speed.

Speaking of speed, the big V12 can propel the 4,299 lbs. SL65 AMG from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and have it top out at 186 mph.

For those whose blood runs a touch thinner, the SL can also be had as the SL550 with a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated 429 horsepower V8 or as the SL63 AMG with a 530 horsepower twin-turbo V8. The only things standing between these choices are the size of your wallet and the temerity of your financial adviser.
